Pre-weakening of hard rock with waterjet – potential breakthrough solution for hard rock cutting

The pre-weakening of a rock mass prior to the cutting process could lead to a breakthrough solution for hard rock cutting. Once feasible it could be the key to developing continuous mining methods for base and precious metals that are currently predominantly mined using drill and blast.

At RWTH Aachen University Rock Cutting Center hard rock samples have been pre-weakened using a high-pressure waterjet with up to 4000 bar and cut afterwards by using the newest cutting technologies.
