Alternative rock-cutting lab at Montanuniversitaet Leoben

The Chair of Mining engineering at Montanuniversitaet Leoben has a strong focus on alternative rock fragmentation technologies. The major focus lies on high-power microwave irradiation for pre-conditioning hard rocks prior to mechanical excavation. The available laboratory infrastructure consists of a 30 kW microwave fracturing apparatus, fully equipped rock mechanics and micro-analytical laboratories and extended computer infrastructure for numerical analysis of underlying physical and mechanical phenomena.

Current research ranges from basic research to improve the understanding microwave-rock interaction principles to applied tests analysing the mechanical behaviour of the rocks as a result of microwave irradiation.
