The importance of research on alternative and hybrid rock extraction methods

With the increasing complexity of currently mined deposits, their depth and the long lead up time to first prodcution, and many more ecologic and economic factors traditonal mining methods come to their limits. There is a strong need to shift current economic boarders of excavation of raw materials. New, alternative fragmentation concepts play a very impottant role in this future development.

Alternative rock-cutting lab at Montanuniversitaet Leoben

The Chair of Mining engineering at Montanuniversitaet Leoben has a strong focus on alternative rock fragmentation technologies. The major focus lies on high-power microwave irradiation for pre-conditioning hard rocks prior to mechanical excavation. The available laboratory infrastructure consists of a 30¬†kW microwave fracturing apparatus, fully equipped rock mechanics and micro-analytical laboratories and extended computer infrastructure … Continue reading Alternative rock-cutting lab at Montanuniversitaet Leoben
